Recommendation:
This is an easy one! If you are on city water, choose city water and get the upper basket. If you are on well water, choose well water and forgo the upper basket!
*Note – this is not an option on our Upflow models, as an upper basket is required regardless of the water source.
Reasoning:
The upper basket acts as a “last resort” to prevent resin from being washed down the drain during the regeneration cycle. Regardless of well water or city water, the likelihood of resin being blown out of a properly sized and configured softener
is extremely small. Some would argue that it is even less likely on wells due to the typically reduced water pressure than is encountered on municipal supplies.
When you couple the above with the fact that an upper basket in a softener on well water will almost certainly (…certainly) eventually become clogged with debris/sediment/iron/etc and caused reduced flow, you can see why we don’t recommend upper baskets on well water!
