Recommendation:
Black is the “in” color with water softeners at the moment, and will certainly lend your utility room or basement a bit of futuristic flair. Additionally, our softener valves are black, so it does provide a more “seamless” look.
However - many Pros (including us at Affordablewater.us!) would recommend Almond color tanks, due to the simple fact that you can check the resin level by holding a flashlight up to the tank in a dark room. This can be invaluable as the softener gets older and you are trying to troubleshoot what might be going on.
*NOTE – IF YOU ARE INSTALLING THE SOFTENER OUTDOORS, YOU MUST GO WITH BLACK. The black fiberglass helps protect the interior of the tank from sunlight and will help retard bacterial overgrowth.
Reasoning:
If you are installing the softener indoors, it really does come down to personal preference. We recommend almond for the reason we explain above, but black is BY FAR the most popular option.
A NOTE ON OUTDOOR INSTALLATIONS – As mentioned above, you
must use a black tank for outdoor installations. In addition, if the softener will be exposed to sunlight when installed outdoors, you must craft or purchase a cover to protect the tank from UV radiation.
The small “lip” of the tank, which is actually just the portion of the poly tank liner sitting above the fiberglass wrap, is prone to degradation from UV radiation and WILL eventually break down and begin to leak if not protected. We do not sell or supply these covers for the simple reason that we cannot find a supplier of that meets our quality standards at an acceptable price.
Some of our customers simply use an overturned 5 gallon bucket, which apparently does the trick – thanks Carl and Jimmy!
