Recommendation:
Professional Recommendation – Our professional opinion is to choose the Stainless Steel Female Iron Pipe (FIP) bypass in the size of your plumbing (either ¾” or 1”).
Don’t know the size of your plumbing? Go with the larger size.
Popular Recommendation - The most popular connector combination chosen with our systems is a Plastic Bypass with Male Iron Pipe (MIP) yoke in the size of your plumbing (either ¾” or 1”). Like
the SS FIP bypass above, if you don’t know the size of your plumbing, go with the larger size – you can always adapt down later.
Reasoning:
First, a few definitions – MIP stands for male iron pipe, and is threaded (NPT/National Pipe Thread) on the outside. FIP stands for female iron pipe, and is threaded (NPT) on the inside.
If you choose an MIP connector, you will need to purchase an FIP adapter at your local hardware store to connect to your plumbing.
If you purchase an FIP connector, you will need to purchase an MIP adapter at your local hardware store.
PTC stands for Push to Connect, and is similar to a “John Guest” or “Sharkbite” fitting in the way it interacts with the plumbing.
*Note – although PTC seems like it would be more simple, the PTC connection can be finicky, ESPECIALLY WHEN USED BY NOVICES, which can result in leaks…and is why we don’t recommend them. That being said, if you are confident in your plumbing skills, the PTC yokes are just as reliable as the other choices, and can certainly save some time.
All our bypasses and yokes are high quality Fleck branded products and will last many years. The “plastic” bypasses and yokes are actually NORYL, which is a very strong blend of two polymers. Fun fact – the original Apple II computer had a NORYL molded case.
We prefer the stainless bypass because it’s single pull handle opens and shuts both sides of the bypass, while the plastic bypass requires the turning of two knobs, which can prove difficult, especially once your softener starts getting up there in years.
